How often do you wonder why some students are so difficult to communicate with when doing business on the college campus?
Their seemingly disengaged, disrespectful, defensive, or antagonistic behavior when communicating with faculty and staff may be the result of emotional distress, life challenges and circumstances, as well as the possibility of trauma history. Often unaware of how these dynamics impact their communication and relationships with others, students may not absorb essential information and support needed for navigating the college environment and working toward success in their academics.
How do we identify these students and what is happening to them? What about me, the employee, who might find these student interactions stressful or even frightening? How is my ability to be present and feel compassion impacted by students’ behavior? Let’s talk about it. How do we create a safe and comfortable environment for all. Learn about Trauma, brain science and Trauma Informed Response.
