This year, BLAX Museum will take place at three different locations and pay tribute to abolitionist William Wells Brown (Vince Robinson), poet Jayne Cortez (Michelle Rankins), actress Dorothy Dandridge (Rosary Kennedy), poet Gil Scott Heron (James Quarles), activist Marsha P. Johnson (Zuggie Tate), singer Chaka Khan (Siaara Freeman), freedom fighter Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (Josiah Quarles), dancer Pearl Primus (Afi Scruggs), poet Sonia Sanchez (Nailah Muhammad), jazz saxophonist Wayne Shorter (Robert Smith III), fashion journalist Andre Leon Talley (Kortney Morrow), and novelist Jesmyn Ward (Dr. Brenda R. Smith), among others, through original art and performances that educate as they entertain.
BLAX Museum (created by Michelle R. Smith in 2018) is a FREE annual arts showcase that is open to all forms and dedicated to honoring notable black figures in American history and culture. Black artists from all over Northeast Ohio participate and celebrate our people in their own creative and community-minded ways.
