“Creole Joe” with C.J. Chenier, Nick Sample and Ray Parker Jr.
When Joe Sample returned to his hometown of Houston, Texas, he was drawn back to the “La La music” with which he grew up. “Southeast Texas and Opelousas is known as the birthplace of La La music. Later it became known as Zydeco,” Sample wrote. Music he called “Creole Folk Music” incorporated Cajun accordion, Delta Blues and good old Texas two-step.
One of the last projects that he put together with his son, bassist Nick Sample, featured C.J. Chenier (accordion/vocals), Ray Parker Jr, (guitar/vocals), Erica Falls (vocals), Raymond Weber (scrub-boardist), Alex McDonald (vocals), June Yamaguchi (guitars), and Skip Nallia (keyboards).
The Creole Joe Band is a crazy and colorful collective – and so much fun that they are keeping it going in Joe’s memory.
