The Dying Experience

The Dying Experience: Expanding Options for
Dying and Suffering Patients

Presenter: Samuel H. LiPuma, associate professor of philosophy at Cuyahoga Community College (register at link below)

When is it morally appropriate for medical intervention to hasten the dying process? Through riveting case studies and
philosophical exploration of religious and secular thought, moral theory and bioethics, Samuel H. LiPuma argues for
expanded options and public policy that will humanize the dying process, expand patient-centered autonomous control
and challenge the United States to move beyond its current death-denying culture. LiPuma examines a patient’s moral right
under carefully defined circumstances to hasten death by means of medical intervention. LiPuma is associate professor of
philosophy at Cuyahoga Community College and co-author of The Dying Experience with Joseph P. DeMarco, Ph.D.
